Building Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

Children need guidance as they learn how to brush and floss effectively. Parents can make oral hygiene easier by creating a consistent routine and helping children understand why taking care of their teeth matters. For most children, we recommend:

  • Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Using fluoride toothpaste appropriate for your child’s age
  • Flossing between teeth that touch each other
  • Limiting sugary snacks and drinks between meals
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Visiting your Sunnyvale pediatric dentist regularly for preventive care

Frequently Asked Questions

Children can begin practicing brushing on their own when they have the coordination and interest to do so. This typically occurs around age 5 or 6, or about when they start learning to tie their own shoes. However, most children still need supervision and assistance for several years. A helpful approach is to let your child brush first, then have a parent brush afterward to make sure all surfaces are cleaned. As your child becomes more independent, continue checking their brushing technique and making sure they are brushing for about two minutes, twice each day.

Baby teeth need to be flossed when they touch each other. Brushing cannot effectively clean the tight spaces between touching teeth. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from these areas, where cavities can develop. Parents will usually need to floss for young children until they have the coordination to do it properly themselves. Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they are important for chewing, speaking, and guiding permanent teeth into their proper positions.

Fluoride toothpaste is safe and beneficial for children when used in the appropriate amount. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and can make teeth more resistant to cavities. For children younger than 3, use a small smear or rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. For children ages 3 and older, use a pea-sized amount. Always encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste after brushing rather than swallowing it.
