Infant dental care focuses on early assessment and preventive measures to ensure healthy oral development. During these initial visits, Dr. Lindley will examine your baby’s gums and emerging teeth, checking for any signs of issues such as tooth decay or developmental concerns. Our team will also offer guidance on proper home care, including how to clean your baby’s teeth and when to start using fluoride toothpaste. We will also discuss feeding habits and their impact on dental health, providing tips to prevent common issues like early childhood cavities. These early visits help establish a positive relationship with dental care and set the stage for lifelong positive oral health.

Special Needs Accommodations

Our Sunnyvale dental practice is proud to offer accommodations for patients with special needs. Pediatric dentists receive additional training for working with special needs patients that general dentists do not. In fact, many patients who need special accommodations continue visiting their pediatric dentists well into adulthood!

Before your child’s first visit, we ask that you get in touch with our team to provide us with any information that we need to make their appointments as pleasant and productive as possible. Some families find it helpful to visit our office for a quick tour before their child’s appointment to help the environment seem more familiar to them. Our sedation options can also make a big difference when helping kids stay calm and relaxed.

Preventive Services

Routine Cleanings and Exams
Routine cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining optimal oral health. During these visits, your child’s hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from their teeth, check for cavities or gum disease, and assess overall oral health. Regular check-ups help catch potential issues early and keep their smile healthy!

Oral Hygiene Instructions
Oral hygiene instructions teach families the best practices for keeping their teeth and gums clean. This includes proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as tips on selecting appropriate dental care products to maintain a healthy mouth and prevent common dental issues.

Custom Mouthguards
Custom mouthguards are tailored devices designed to protect teeth during physical activities or sports. Made from a mold of your child’s teeth, these mouthguards offer a snug fit and effectively absorb impact, reducing the risk of dental injuries and damage.

Occlusal Guards
Occlusal guards, also known as night guards, are custom-made appliances worn over the teeth to prevent damage from grinding or clenching. They help alleviate symptoms of bruxism, such as jaw pain and tooth wear, by providing a cushioning effect between the upper and lower teeth.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical treatment used to halt the progression of cavities and reduce tooth sensitivity. It contains silver, which acts as an antimicrobial agent, and fluoride, which helps remineralize the tooth structure. SDF is particularly useful for managing early childhood cavities and can be a minimally invasive option for cavity control.

SMART Fillings
SMART (Sterilization, Management, and Restoration of Teeth) fillings are a technique that emphasizes the removal of decay and the use of biocompatible materials to restore teeth. This approach aims to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible and uses materials that are both safe and effective in repairing cavities while minimizing the risk of further decay.

Hall Crowns
Hall crowns are preformed metal crowns placed over a tooth without removing any of the decayed tooth structure. They are commonly used in pediatric dentistry to quickly and effectively restore severely decayed primary teeth, protecting them until they naturally fall out to make way for permanent teeth.

Professional Bleaching Trays for Teens
Bleaching trays are custom-fitted trays used to apply teeth-whitening gel evenly across the surface of the teeth. They are worn at home for a specified period, allowing for gradual and controlled whitening. The trays are designed to fit snugly, ensuring that the whitening agent is in close contact with the teeth for optimal results.

Icon Resin Infiltration
Icon resin infiltration is a technique used to treat early-stage tooth decay without drilling. It involves applying a thin, fluid resin to the affected area, which penetrates and hardens inside the enamel to stop the progression of decay and restore the tooth’s appearance. This minimally invasive method preserves the tooth structure while addressing early cavities.

Frequently Asked Questions

During a child’s routine dental checkup, we examine their teeth, gums, and mouth to check for cavities, growth issues, or any additional concerns. We clean their teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup and may take X-rays if needed to spot hidden problems. We also apply fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and offer guidance on brushing, flossing, and diet to help keep their smile healthy between visits.

Potential signs of tooth decay include visible dark spots or holes, tooth sensitivity or pain when eating hot, cold, or sweet foods, and sometimes swelling or redness in the gums near the tooth. If your child complains of discomfort or you notice any unusual changes in their teeth, it’s important to schedule a dental exam. Early cavities are easier to treat and prevent from worsening.

Determining if a child needs a custom athletic mouthguard is pretty simple, as kids only need mouthguards if they are participating in contact sports like football or soccer. When it comes to teeth grinding, it can be trickier for parents to identify unless they hear their child grinding their teeth in their sleep or they complain of jaw pain. Our team will also examine their teeth and gums during checkups and assess if there are any signs of bruxism.

Professional teeth whitening treatments are safe for teens and are usually recommended only after all their permanent teeth have come in and the teeth and gums are healthy. We assess each teen individually to ensure professional whitening gel won’t cause sensitivity or damage. Our team also provides instructions for parents and patients to ensure that treatments are used appropriately for effective results.
