When Are Baby Root Canals Necessary?
December 26, 2025 9:00 amIt can be startling for parents to hear that their child might need a baby root canal. After all, baby teeth fall out—so why go through the trouble? The truth is, primary teeth play a vital role in your child’s development, and sometimes preserving them with a baby root canal (also called pulpotomy or pulp therapy) is the best way to protect your child’s comfort, oral health, and future smile.
Why Save a Baby Tooth at All?
Primary teeth may only be around for a few years, but they’re essential for guiding adult teeth into proper alignment. They help with speech development, chewing, and jaw growth. When a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay or infection, it can lead to problems like misalignment or overcrowding later on.
What Is a Baby Root Canal (Pulpotomy)?
A baby root canal is not as invasive as the adult version. It involves removing the infected or inflamed portion of the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), while keeping the remaining healthy pulp intact. This procedure helps maintain the structure of the tooth until it’s naturally ready to fall out.
The area is thoroughly numbed, and your child stays comfortable throughout. Once the infected pulp is removed, the area is disinfected and sealed, and a crown (often stainless steel) is placed to protect the tooth until it naturally sheds.
When Is a Baby Root Canal Needed?
Dr. Anne Lindley may recommend pulp therapy when:
- A cavity has reached the inner pulp but the infection hasn’t spread beyond it
- Your child has a persistent toothache, especially when chewing or with temperature changes
- There’s visible trauma to the tooth, such as a fracture or deep chip
- Swelling or signs of infection are present around the tooth or gums
An X-ray will help confirm if the infection is still contained in the pulp chamber and if the tooth can be saved.
What Happens If You Don’t Treat It?
Delaying treatment can result in the spread of infection, increased pain, and damage to surrounding teeth and tissues. The tooth may need to be extracted, which can cause long-term spacing issues or the need for a space maintainer.
