Teething Baby Symptoms: What’s Normal, What’s Not?

March 25, 2025 9:00 am

When your baby starts teething, it can feel like everything is happening all at once—drool, fussiness, chewing on everything. You might find yourself asking, “Is this normal?” and “How long is this going to last?” The good news? Teething is a completely natural process. The not-so-great news? It can get a little bumpy.

Most babies begin teething around six months old, though some start earlier or later. The lower front teeth are usually the first to arrive, followed by the top front pair. Teething continues on and off for a couple of years as the full set of baby teeth comes in.

Common Teething Symptoms

If your baby suddenly seems cranky and has their fingers (or yours) constantly in their mouth, teething may be to blame. Here are a few signs to watch for:

Excessive drooling: Expect plenty of bib changes.

Chewing and biting: Toys, blankets, or anything nearby might become chew toys.

Swollen or tender gums: You may even spot a little white bump beneath the surface.

Irritability: Sore gums can make naps shorter and cries louder.

Slight increase in temperature: A low-grade fever is sometimes linked to teething, but high fevers are not.

What’s Not Caused By Teething?

While teething can cause mild discomfort, it shouldn’t cause a high fever, diarrhea, or a full-blown rash. If your baby seems really unwell or their symptoms don’t match up with common teething signs, it’s best to check in with your pediatrician.

Easing Teething Troubles

Cool teething rings, a clean finger to rub sore gums, or even a chilled washcloth can help soothe irritated gums. In some cases, your child’s pediatric dentist or pediatrician may recommend a small dose of infant Tylenol to ease the discomfort—especially at night. Always follow dosage instructions carefully and check with your child’s doctor first. Avoid teething gels with benzocaine and steer clear of teething necklaces, which pose a choking and strangulation risk.
