Different Types of Sports Mouthguards & Their Expected Lifespans

If your child plays sports, a mouthguard should be just as important as a helmet or shin guards. It’s a small piece of gear that protects against big injuries—like chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, or even jaw fractures. But not all mouthguards are created equal, and they don’t last forever.

At Dr. Anne Lindley’s pediatric dental office in Sunnyvale, TX, we often get questions about which type is best and how long it will hold up. Here’s what you need to know before tossing one into a sports bag and calling it good.

    Stock Mouthguards

These are the kind you’ll find at most sporting goods stores. They’re pre-formed, inexpensive, and ready to wear out of the package. While convenient and inexpensive, they don’t offer a great fit—and because of that, kids are less likely to keep them in during play. Kids may have to bite down constantly to keep them in place.

Because they’re made from thinner material, stock mouthguards wear out faster. Expect to replace them at least once per season — maybe more if they show signs of damage or discomfort.

    Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards

These are also store-bought, but they offer a more customized fit. You soften them in hot water, then have your child bite down to mold it to their teeth. They’re more comfortable and provide better protection, especially for younger athletes.

Boil-and-bite guards usually last one season, depending on how often they’re used and how well they’re cared for. Kids who grind their teeth or chew on the mouthguard may need replacements sooner.

    Custom Mouthguards

Made by a dentist like Dr. Lindley, custom mouthguards are designed from a mold of your child’s teeth. They offer the best fit, feel, and protection—and they’re more likely to stay in place.

With good care, custom guards can last 1-2 years, depending on wear and growth. For younger kids still losing teeth, more frequent updates may be needed.
